Since its 2013 release, GTA5 has become one of the most successful games ever made, thanks to its three protagonists, the Los Santos open world, and an online mode that has run continuously. Thirteen years on, GTA6 arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The two games differ sharply in setting, gameplay, technology, and narrative. Below is a comparison across several dimensions.
Setting: Los Santos vs the State of Leonida
GTA5 takes place in Los Santos and Blaine County, in the state of San Andreas, modeled on Los Angeles and Southern California and spanning city, desert, mountains, and coastline. The map centers on one large city, with the surrounding areas relatively sparse.
GTA6 returns to modern-day Vice City and places it inside the wider state of Leonida, inspired by Florida. Six regions have been officially confirmed: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Community members and developers say the overall map is about 2–2.5 times the size of GTA5’s, and Vice City alone is significantly larger than Los Santos. Environmental variety is higher as well, from neon city to mangrove swamp and tropical islands to industrial port, with more natural transitions between them.

Protagonists: Three-Way Switching vs Two-Person Teamwork
GTA5 introduced three switchable protagonists (Michael, Franklin, and Trevor), and players could switch at any time while exploring or on missions. The three have wildly different personalities, and the story revolves around cooperation and conflict.
GTA6 moves to two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, inspired by a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style outlaw couple. Switching leans harder into cooperation: one drives while the other shoots, or the two split up and regroup. The relationship system has optional depth, so it can turn romantic or stay purely professional. Lucia is the first female protagonist in a mainline entry, and the story focuses more tightly on the two surviving together and depending on each other.

Gameplay and Systems Upgrades
Wanted System
GTA5 used mainly a five-star system: break line of sight and wait for the stars to disappear.
GTA6 brings back six stars and adds a “heat” mechanic: police record appearance, clothing, vehicle, and surveillance footage. Players lower heat by changing clothes, destroying cameras, swapping vehicles, or even splitting up, making escapes more tactical.
Lifestyle and Appearance Systems
GTA5’s body changes were fairly limited.
GTA6 greatly expands how diet, exercise, and sleep affect a character’s appearance, with more visible changes to build and face, continuing the simulation depth of Red Dead Redemption 2.
World Feedback
GTA5’s NPC reactions were relatively limited.
GTA6 emphasizes a reactive world: carrying a gun in public draws different responses from passersby and police, NPCs have more complex schedules and random events, and the world’s density and interactivity rise noticeably.
Missions and Narrative
GTA5 missions centered on three-person crews and followed a fairly linear structure.
GTA6 leans harder into two-person cooperation and relationship choices, cutscenes flow almost seamlessly into gameplay, and the chapter-based structure is closer to Red Dead Redemption 2.

Technology and Visuals
GTA5 has been remastered and enhanced several times, but its foundations remain a last-generation engine. GTA6 is built for next-gen consoles, with character skin, hair, cloth, lighting, and reflections reaching new heights. Vehicle physics, water, and environmental detail have improved noticeably as well. Outlets such as Digital Foundry have called its character rendering and real-time performance top-tier for this generation.
Platforms and Release Strategy
GTA5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360, was later ported to multiple console generations and PC, and its online mode has run for more than a decade.
GTA6 launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no confirmed date for a PC version. At launch it is explicitly a single-player experience, and the online mode is expected later. The physical edition takes the form of an in-box download code, with no disc.

GTA6 is not simply a bigger version of its predecessor; it evolves setting, narrative, and systems across the board. It keeps the series’ signature freedom and satire while absorbing the immersion and detail of Red Dead Redemption 2. For players who know GTA5, it is both a familiar crime sandbox and an entirely new leap in experience. The real gap will be verified firsthand by players after the November 19, 2026 launch.
