Vehicles have always been the soul of the GTA series. GTA6 upgrades driving feel, physics, customization depth, and vehicle variety significantly. Based on the official trailers, Extended Look footage, and developer interviews, here are the confirmed core elements of the vehicle system.

Driving Physics: Weight Without the Learning Curve

Rockstar has said plainly that vehicle physics were “rebuilt from scratch.” The development goal is to blend GTA4’s sense of weight with GTA5’s accessibility. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, notes that the team now has finer control over drivetrains, tires, suspension, and steering.

The footage shows clear improvements:

Cars have real body roll and weight transfer through corners

Suspension compresses and rebounds over uneven road surfaces

Vehicle types feel far more distinct (sports cars grip hard, muscle cars kick the tail out easily, off-roaders handle rough terrain better)

Tires can be shot flat and can even cause a rollover

Collision damage is more detailed, with some parts deforming or falling off

Overall it feels heavier than GTA5 but is nowhere near as punishing to pick up as GTA4. Narrower streets and denser traffic also make driving more of a challenge in itself.

The footage shows clear improvements:

Vehicle Types and Map Fit

Leonida spans cities, swamps, islands, and ports, so the vehicle roster is broader:

Land: sports cars, muscle cars, SUVs, pickups, trucks, motorcycles, electric scooters, and more

Water: airboats (built for shallow swamps), speedboats, yachts, kayaks, jet skis

Air: helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and more

Official and community tallies suggest the launch lineup could top 200 vehicles, with some models offering different configurations and livery variants. Watercraft matter noticeably more, especially in the Grassrivers and the Leonida Keys.

Car Theft and Ownership Get an Upgrade

Stealing a car is no longer a simple hotwire button press. Some high-end vehicles need specific tools, such as a key cloner, to start. Carjacking still works, but NPCs resist harder. Some cars carry GPS trackers, so after taking one you will need to outrun the signal or remove the tracker.

Players can register stolen cars as personal vehicles for a fee, and trunks can hold weapons, clothes, or even a place to hide. A fuel system returns (some information suggests it is in), and gas stations let you refuel and carry out basic repairs. Vehicle damage affects both driving performance and resale value.

Customization Goes Deeper

Mod shops return and are greatly expanded. Beyond the usual paint, wheels, engine, brakes, and suspension, the game supports:

Interior customization (seats, steering wheel, lighting, and more)

Body kits, widebody conversions, underglow, exhaust flame color

Off-road conversion kits

Preset mod packages (applied quickly)

Some exclusive mod shops and content are tied to the Ultimate Edition, but basic customization is open to all players. Cars can become mobile bases, tying into the character life systems.

Details and Immersion

Dashboards, mirror reflections, and in-car buttons are all much more detailed

Turn signals work

Vehicles accumulate dirt and grime

Different surfaces (wet roads, sand, grass) affect grip

First-person driving is expected to return

Comparison with Previous Games

Item: GTA5 vs. GTA6. Driving feel: arcade-leaning with strong grip vs. a balance of weight and easy handling. Damage system: fairly simple vs. more detailed and affecting performance. Car theft: almost no restrictions vs. tiered restrictions plus tool requirements. Customization depth: mainly appearance and performance vs. full interior, exterior, and off-road coverage. Watercraft: relatively minor vs. significantly more important after the map was adapted. Personal vehicles: limited vs. can be registered, stored, and customized.

Comparison with Previous Games

Summary

GTA6’s vehicle system is no longer just a tool for getting from point A to point B; it is core gameplay tied to physics, strategy, and personalization. Driving has more challenge and feedback, customization is freer, water and land transport both matter, and theft and ownership have more layers. Those changes make getting around Leonida feel closer to reality and better match what players expect from a modern open world.
