GTA6 carries on the series’ core gameplay while introducing several major changes. Based on official trailers, the Extended Look gameplay demo, and developer interviews, here are the main gameplay features confirmed so far.

Seamless Two-Protagonist Switching

Seamless Two-Protagonist Switching

The biggest gameplay highlight is the Jason and Lucia dual-protagonist system. Players can switch between the two at any time, whether exploring freely or in the middle of a mission.

Switching is extremely smooth: when one is driving, the other can scroll their phone or shoot from the passenger seat, and during a chase control can be handed instantly to whoever is shooting or driving. The two can act side by side or split up and work independently. This design gives missions more layers and strengthens the sense of the two as “crime partners.” The depth of the relationship is optional: players can develop a romance or keep it purely a working partnership.

Life and Appearance Simulation

Life and Appearance Simulation

GTA6 greatly expands character life simulation. Eating, exercising, and sleeping genuinely change Jason’s and Lucia’s physique and appearance: eating too much puts on weight, working out builds muscle, and long stretches of late nights or being on the run leave marks on their faces. These changes are not just numbers but visible, direct visual feedback.

The system follows the approach of Red Dead Redemption 2 but fits modern city life more closely. A character’s day-to-day state feeds back into interactions and appearance, giving players a stronger sense of “looking after” their character.

An Upgraded Wanted and Police System

An Upgraded Wanted and Police System

The wanted system returns from five stars to six and adds a more granular “heat” mechanic. Crimes no longer trigger a wanted level automatically; police only respond after an NPC witnesses the crime or an alarm is tripped.

Police record specific details: appearance, clothes, vehicle, and whether there is surveillance footage. Players can lower their heat by changing outfits, destroying cameras, swapping vehicles, or even having the two split up. Star colors and states are more intuitive too: a solid white star means you were directly seen, a flashing one means you have just broken line of sight, a hollow one means there is a report but no description, and red means police are still searching the area.

This makes escaping more about strategy than a straight test of top speed.

A Reactive Open World and NPCs

A Reactive Open World and NPCs

Leonida reacts more strongly. Carrying weapons openly draws different reactions from passersby and police, and NPCs have their own schedules and random events. The world is no longer a static backdrop; it responds to what the player does.

Side activities are abundant, and the demo already showed fishing, diving, basketball, go-karts, nightclubs, street interactions, airboats, skydiving, and more. The map covers Vice City, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, and Mount Kalaga National Park, with environments that shift naturally and a markedly larger space to explore.

Missions Woven into the Story

Missions Woven into the Story

Mission design emphasizes two-person teamwork. The demo has already shown types such as a pickup ambushed by a raid, escorting bank robbers, and bodyguard jobs. Cutscenes and gameplay flow almost seamlessly together, with far fewer black screens and a stronger sense of immersion. The main story is expected to be long (industry estimates put it at around 80 hours), and relationship choices may affect some narrative branches.

Other Details

  • The phone system is more capable, including usable social media feeds.
  • Weapon and vehicle handling are more refined, with noticeably improved physics.
  • Safe houses are more interactive and support storing food, clothing, and more.
  • Crimes gradually build up a character’s “Criminal Profile,” which affects later encounters.

Summary

GTA6’s gameplay core comes down to three things: deeper two-person cooperation, more realistic life simulation, and a smarter wanted system with a more responsive world. It does not abandon the series’ signature freedom and chaos; it adds strategy and immersion on top of them. Whether you want to play through a carefully crafted main story or roam Leonida freely, the game offers plenty of options.

With the November 19, 2026 release approaching, these systems will face their final test in the finished game. From what has been shown so far, Rockstar’s ambition and level of polish on the gameplay side are clearly above those of previous entries.
